The Benefits of Thai Boxing For Teens

The Benefits of Thai Boxing For Teens
By Joey Reyes

In this day of childhood obesity, parents are always looking for ways to get their teenagers off the couch and getting exercise in a way that is fun and doesn't feel like work. This is where Thai Boxing comes in. Regardless of your child's age or skill level, this exciting program will help them in many ways. Your child will develop self-control, confidence, self-discipline, and focus, all while learning valuable self-defense. This workout will increase your child's strength, stamina, coordination, and stability.

From a cardiovascular standpoint, your child will develop core strength, improve his reflexes, and increase his flexibility. Kids dealing with mental stress (and what teenager isn't!) find this to be a very positive outlet. Teens will also make friendships with other kids with similar interests. Teenagers are typically dealing with peer pressure and low self-esteem. Learning Thai boxing will help your child to be confident, self-assured, and respectful of others. The main focus of Martial Arts training in general is not just about learning self-defense. It is about perfection of character.
Because boxing helps an individual's concentration, it is often a recommended workout for kids with ADD or ADHD. They benefit from the structured training techniques. It also helps them channel any anger or frustration they are feeling and gives them a needed outlet for their excess energy.

You may be worried that your child will become increasingly violent with his newfound knowledge. Since such emphasis is put on respecting others, bullying is not a result of Martial Arts training. As a matter of fact, kids and teenagers develop more positive social behaviour as a result of their skill. You may also be worried that your child will be injured. Statistics show that your child will more likely be injured playing sports, than in practicing Martial Arts. However, you should make sure that the program in which you enrol your teenager uses safety measures, such as padded floors and that protective equipment is worn during sparring.

Whether your teenager is an introvert or an extrovert, this program can benefit him in many ways. Thai boxing can draw the introvert out of his shyness and bring out his inner "tiger." He will come away feeling more self-confident than ever. The extrovert will find Thai boxing to be an excellent way to channel all his surplus energy. He will become calmer and more composed now that he has a healthy outlet in which to compete with others. The bottom line is this: your child will come out of the program a healthier, more rounded individual that you can be very proud of. He will be more prepared to face the future with the skills and knowledge that he has obtained here.

Thai Boxing - The English Translation of Muay Thai

Thai Boxing - The English Translation of Muay Thai
By Lloyd Irvin Jr

Thai boxing is the English translation of Muay Thai, Thailand's national sport. This form of boxing is a form of hand-to-hand combat that was adapted from the Thai army. Boxers in the Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C. areas are becoming more and more interested in this form of boxing.

Thai boxing in early Muay Thai bouts put companies of the Siamese army against one another with very little rules, weight division and time limits. However in the early 20th century it was determined that boxing gloves and rules were needed to regulate the sport for more modern times. After these rules and regulations were implemented the sport began to be exported from country to country. Today, hundreds of thousands of people enjoy the sport for self defense reasons and for competition.

Training in Thai boxing includes kicks, grappling, head-butts, punches, elbows and knees being used in an effort to wear down or knock out their adversary. The training helps develop power, speed and cardiovascular health. It is considered an art form that calls on the bodies own natural weapons to create a competitive fighting style. It is used not only in the ring as a competitive sport but also by military and law enforcement agencies as well as self defense instructors.

This type of martial arts combines Thai boxing hand techniques with almost any natural weapon your body has such as: feet, elbows, knees, legs, head and shoulders to deliver powerful blows to an adversary. It is known specifically for its power, effects, simplicity and conditioning. In addition, it renders the Thai boxer a physical fit body with self control and an understanding of how the ancient Thai boxers must have felt when fighting for their own self defense.

When first entering a Thai boxing class, the beginner will learn the basics and concentrate on the proper form. They will learn defensive strikes, the proper footwork and simple combinations of simple strikes. This is the perfect class for a young child of about 7 years of age.

A normal Thai boxing class is fast paced and concentrates primarily on the traditional Muay Thai. The art of using strikes from hands, feet, elbows and knees to defend themselves in the ring as well as outside of the ring. This class of Thai boxers can become a strong ring fighter in a relatively short period of time.

Mixed martial arts are a combination of different martial art traditions. It includes styles of Thai boxing, Kali-Silat from both the Philippines and Indonesia and jujutsu and judo from Japan. This class is used to give students a variety of fighting styles. Students are taught to defend themselves in a variety of situations and be given the opportunity to specialize in an area of interest such as striking, grappling, clinching and other moves associated with mixed martial arts.

Thai Boxing (Muay Thai)

Thai Boxing (Muay Thai)
By Andy Khong

The art of Thai Boxing has been made popular in recent years by the newspapers, tv, movies and competition world-wide.

Contrary to its name, it is not purely a martial art from Thailand. Like most martial arts, it can trace its origins to China and was adapted over time with influence from other countries and surrounding regions. With the introduction of western boxing, the techniques and some of the rules were adopted into the fighting art. The basis of the art is simple - use of the head, fists, elbows, knees, shin and feet. It is known as the King of Martial Arts due to its effectiveness and brutal effect as a striking art. Some practitioners of other martial arts from all over the world have gone to fight in Thailand to test the effectiveness of Thai Boxing and have lost.

It is promoted by Thailand as its fighting art and aptly named Muay Thai, with the Sanskrit word "Muay" adopted into the Thai language for martial art. Surrounding countries like Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar (Burma) also practise the fighting art where they have their own variations, and is known under different local names like Bando in Myanmar.

In Bangkok, Thai Boxing matches are usually held at Ratchadamnoen Stadium on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday & Thursday, and Lumpini Stadium on Tuesday, Friday & Saturday. Today, the art is practised by men and women worldwide for fitness, health and self-defence. Practitioners wanting a feel of its traditions may also train in Thailand as some Thai Boxing schools now cater to foreigners.

How to Choose a New Pair of Muay Thai Shorts

How to Choose a New Pair of Muay Thai Shorts

By Ilm Khal

Choosing Muay Thai shorts to buy can be challenging for some. There are so many varieties to choose from, such as the fabric material it is made of, choice of colors, embroidery designs, size and price. However, the key to choosing your new shorts is your own comfort and freedom of movement. Both of which are important factors to consider, especially when you are going to wear it in training or even in competition.

Muay Thai shorts are generally shorter than boxing shorts in length and are designed wide-legged to allow maximum freedom of movement for your legs to execute fast and powerful kicks unhindered. Regular boxing shorts would certainly restrict a practitioner from executing proper kicks which range from low, mid, and high kicks to the opponents head especially.

Below is a guide for men's shorts size.

Size | Waist    | Length | Weight*

S | 26" | 14" | 92-108 lb
M | 28" | 15" | 108-126 lb
L | 30" | 16" | 126-143 lb
XL | 32" | 17" | 143-159 lb
XXL | 34-37" | 18" | 159-176 lb
4L | 38-42" | 19" | 176 lb up
5L | 44-50" | 20" | 176 lb up
6L | 50" up | 21" | 176 lb up

* You should only refer to the weight category if you are an average-built man. Weight reference is not suitable for those who are too thin nor overweight.

The cheapest Muay Thai shorts are made of nylon but they are lower in quality compared to others. The best quality shorts are made of satin and are most popular among many fighters. Polyester made shorts are about the same quality as the ones made of satin, only, they weigh lighter.

Although most Muay Thai shorts are machine washables nowadays, I would suggest that you do not leave your shorts soaking in detergent overnight or to spin it in the machine too often. Instead, just hand wash lightly and quickly rinse and hang them to dry would do a better job to lengthen its lifespan. I once had a pair of shorts that I soaked in detergent for too long and the waist band totally lost its elasticity.

If you are shopping for a new pair of Muay Thai shorts, I recommend that you checkout the wide range of Muay Thai shorts offered here [http://www.muaythaigears.info]. Yes, certainly you would want to buy and wear one that is comfortable, allow freedom of movements, and fittingly display your personality on the ring or in the gym.

Hope this helps.
